ASUU Journal of Humanities is a journal of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for disseminating research outputs of academics in Nigeria, Africa and the rest of the world. The peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal aims at promoting scholarship in the Humanities (Liberal Arts). Contributions as discursive articles, reports of empirical investigations and position papers are welcome. Also acceptable are papers in other modes of presentation that fit into any of the scholarly traditions in the broad field of social sciences. In addition, the journal welcomes short book reviews of not more than 1,500 words in the field.

Resolutions of the 16th NDC, 2010

The 16th National Delegates' Conference of ASUU took place in the context of the failure by the ruling class to find a viable basis for the resolution of the economic, political and social crises caused by almost fifty years of misrule.The crisis is manifest in the unproductive economy, an alarming rate of unemployment, a wobbling education system, systematic disenfranchisement of the people that ultimately perpetuates corrupt leadership, and, the absence of a people-drive alternative.In this context, the resolutions of NDC were made bearing in mind the short-term needs of the country and deeper, transformatory needs.

| We have cause once more, to have to address you on the state of our dear country, Nigeria. The Unions position on issues of great concern to the socio-economic development of the people of Nigeria, bordering on the state of our economy and society; the issue of the 1999 Constitution and its review;

| The events of the last few weeks featuring the sad demise of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Umar Yaradua and culminating in the emergence of a new President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, have been quite momentous.

ASUU SUSPENDS STRIKE INDEFINITELY

The purpose of this Press Conference is not to re-open these issues that are now common knowledge. The purpose is to explain to you some important details about the Agreement reached, and to give you ASUUs position on the extent to which the Agreement could go to resolve the problems which face the Nigerian University System and the education system as a whole.
